Borussia Moenchengladbach have sacked coach Holger Fach on Wednesday after a second consecutive defeat left the club hovering above the Bundesliga drop zone.

Amateur team coach Horst Koeppel has been appointed in a caretaker capacity, Moenchengladbach said in a statement.

Fach agreed to quit following a 3-0 defeat at fellow strugglers VfL Bochum on Tuesday evening.

Fach, 42, joined the club in September 2003, replacing the Ewald Lienen and managed to keep the club in the top flight.

“Our nine points from the first 10 games, and our exit from the German Cup, is not good,” club president Rolf Koenigs said.

“We have to ask if we can achieve our season’s goal with Holger Fach of establishing ourselves in the Bundesliga without fear of relegation.”

Moenchengladbach have won just twice in 10 league games this season and lie 15th in the 18-team Bundesliga.
