Olympiakos have appointed Nikos Alefantos as their new coach, replacing the Ukrainian Oleh Protasov who was sacked on Tuesday.

Alefantos, for whom the term ‘well-travelled’ may well have been coined, has coached more than 25 teams during a long career in management.

He returns to the Athens club for a third time after two brief spells with the club in previous decades. He was first in charge of Olympiakos from November 1983 until March 1984 and returned in January 1994, remaining until September that year.

Protasov’s dismissal was confirmed on Tuesday, 48 hours after a home defeat by AEK Athens cost the club their place at the top of the table.
