João Contreras, a Peruvian player survived after being struck by lignhning during a match.

Contreras along with a linesman, was struck while playing for Sport Águila against Fuerza Minera. The game, which was staged amid heavy rain in the Andean city of Huancayo, was 1-1 at the time but abandoned because of the accident.

Initial reports claimed that Contreras had died. Fortunately, despite suffering second-degree burns, he is in a stable condition and recovering in hospital.

“Those affected by the lightning strike in the game are out of danger,” the club added. “Our boys are good but they were terribly shaken.”

A Peruvian newspaper celebrated Contreras’s survival with the headline: “Man stronger than nature”.
