Schalke are set to beat Tottenham to sign PSV Eindhoven midfielder Marc van Bommel.

The German side are believed to be keen to seal a deal with PSV after tonight’s Uefa Cup tie against Newcastle on Wednesday

. “I think it will go through,” his joint agent Rob Jansen told Kicker magazine.

Van Bommel has been linked with a move to Spurs for several months but Schalke look likely to win the race for his signatue. However, one possible stumbling block could be the fee with Schalke general manager Rudi Assauer warning that his club would not become involved in a bidding war.

“Six million euros (£4m) for van Bommel is unrealistic,” Assauer told DSF television.

‘But he does not want to go to England he wants to come to Schalke.”
