Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has agreed a deal for Strasbourg’s Christian Bassila.

The 27-year-old Frenchman is expected to sign a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light if he passes a medical and agrees personal terms.

“Hopefully he’ll be here on Monday,” said McCarthy. “We are just waiting for international clearance.

“He’s a defensive midfielder player who can play in the back four as well. He’s big and tall and very powerful.”

It will be Bassila’s second spell in England after he spent time on loan at West Ham in 2001.
