Djibril Cisse is set to miss Euro 2004 after UEFA handed the gifted French striker a five-match ban.

The Auxerre frontman was suspended following his dismissal for France’s Under-21 side in their European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Portugal last month.

Cisse was sent off for kicking Portuguese full back Mario Sergio just before half time. However, the striker then refused to leave the pitch immediately and also insulted English referee Rob Styles before making his way off the field.

The five-match ban effectively rulles Cisse him out of France’s EURO 2004 plans.

The French Football Federation are expected to appeal the ban.
