Burly Danish midfielder Stig Tofting has been charged with assault after allegedly headbutting a man, then hitting another man.

The midfielder who announced his retirement from international football after Denmark’s second round defeat to England, was held in custody but was released this morning after a night in the cells.

“There was no reason to hold Tofting any longer. This case of violence is not much different to so many others we regrettably see,” said Copenhagen police chief Per Leo Jepsen.

Police were called to a disturbance at the Cafe Ketchup, where the Denmark midfielder is alleged to have heatbut the cafe’s owner and then hit a man who came to tried to separate the pair.

Tofting was at an official Danish football federation function with several team-mates when the incident occurred.
