Senegal coach Henryk Kasperczak has quit on a day after his team’s 3-1 defeat to Angola in the African Nations Cup.
“I have offered my resignation and it has been accepted by the federation,” the former Poland World Cup defender told reporters. “I have told the players of my decision.”
The 61-year-old was coaching at the Nations Cup for the fifth time, having previously led Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Morocco and Mali.
Sunday’s defeat left Senegal with one point from two games in Group D and facing an early exit. Even if they beat South Africa in their final game they must hope that Angola and Tunisia, who have four points apiece, draw in the other match.
Assistant coach Lamine Ndaye will take charge against South Africa.
“I’m the only one responsible for the results,” Kasperczak said. “I am sorry for the Senegalese supporters, who are obviously very disappointed.
“There is still a small chance and I think the players will respond to the presence of a new coach.
“Why did we play so badly in the second half? It’s football, it’s a complex thing but there’s still a little hope,” he said. “I reflected and thought that maybe I was the one at fault.”
