Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo stays at the top of the ESM Golden Shoe rankings after scoring the opener in his side’s 4-0 win over Racing Santander. That’s 28 for the season and an astonishing 94 goals in 86 league appearances for the Portuguese forward.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, closed the gap at the top of the rankings by scoring an incredible four goals in Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Valencia. The Argentinian has now scored 27 in 23 league appearances this season and looks set to push last season’s Golden Shoe winner, Ronaldo, to the wire.

Elsewhere, no other player in the top ten managed to get on the scoresheet last weekend and this season’s winner looks set to be a two-horse race between Messi and Ronaldo.

Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.
