Higuain still on top in closely-contested ESM Golden Shoe race

Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain continues to set the pace at the head of the ESM Golden Shoe standings.

The Argentinian scored the opener in his side’s 5-1 win over Mmpoli last weekend to take his tally for the season to 23. That places Higuain one clear of Benfica’s ‘Jonas’ and Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, both of whom scored braces at the weekend.

That trio are being hotly pursued by a pair of former winners of the Golden Shoe. Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the holder and a four-time winner of the award and Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, who shared the trophy with the Portuguese forward in 2013-14, are now level on 19 goals with the early-season pacesetter, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

Jamie Vardy has made a return to the top ten after he scored both goals in Leicester City’s 2-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday night. The first of those goals, a stunning volley struck from outside the penalty area, was a contender for goal of the season.
