Lionel Messi cuts into Cristiano Ronaldo’s lead in ESM Golden Shoe standings

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to action after completing his two-match suspension, but the Portuguese striker was unable to add to his tally for the season, as Real Madrid were hammered 4-0 by neighbours Atletico.

Behind Ronaldo, lurks Lionel Messi who has cut what once looked an impregnable lead at the top of the standings to just five goals. The Argentinian was on target in Barcelona’s 5-2 win over Athletic Bilbao, a match which also saw teammate Neymar get on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere in the top ten, there was little movement with tw of the season’s most prolific forwards, Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette, absent though suspension and injury respectively.

Meanwhile, Porto’s Jackson Martinez took his tally to the season to 16 with a goal against Moreirense at the weekend.
