Two more goals at the weekend for Luis Suarez have put the Uruguayan striker in a near-impregnable position in his bid to regain the ESM Golden Shoe he last won in 2013-14.

The Barcelona man netted twice in his side’s 5-0 win over Espanyol to take his tally to 37 for the season. With one match remaining, that gives him what appears an unassailable four-goal lead over his closest challengers, Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Impressively, Suarez is also leading Spain’s table for assists this season with 15, level with his team-mate, Lionel Messi, a three-time winner of the Golden Shoe, but currently languishing in 7th place in the race to become Europe’s leading goalscorer.

Completing the top ten are a collection of Europe’s leading names, including PSG’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

But with the end of the European season fast approaching, it is Luis Suarez who looks set to complete a memorable campaign by being named as the continent’s leading goalscorer.

Rules

Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, England and Portugal – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.
