Barcelona defender Eric Abidal is recovering well after surgery to remove a liver tumour, according to the club’s sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta.
France international Abidal underwent the operation in Spain last Thursday and it is hoped that he will leave hospital later this week.
The 31-year-old is not expected to resume his playing career until next season, but Zubizarreta is pleased to see his colleague is coping well.
“He is fine, in good shape and in high spirits,” Zubizarreta told Mundo Deportivo after visiting Abidal at the hospital.
“I passed on all the signs of affection that many clubs have sent him.”
Barcelona and Getafe players paid tribute to Abidal as they came out wearing T-shirts dedicated to the player during their league match at the weekend.
