Spanish outfit Celta Vigo are set to launch a bid for Aston Villa’s Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel.

Angel, who is currently back in Columbia recuperating from a knee operation, has failed to show the form which earned him a record œ9.5m move from River Plate in January 2001.

Angel has scored only 14 league goals in 53 appearances and with Villa urgently needing goals, Angel may be sacrificed to finance a move for a new striker.

Villa manager Graham Taylor has confirmed that Celta Vigo are interested in the striker, but insists he is unaware of any deal being struck.

“I have heard, along with others, of an interest,” said Taylor. “But unless people are keeping things from me, and I can’t see why, there hasn’t been any contact. So we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Celta Vigo are not the only team in the frame for Angel’s signature, as Real Betis are reported to be interested in signing him.
