Bayern Munich secured a record 18th Bundesliga title, with Roy Makaay netting a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory over Kaiserslautern.

With closest rivals Schalke drawing 3-3 with Bayer Leverkusen Bayern’s victory took them 11 points clear with three games to play.

After hearing the Schalke result come through the Bayern players raced onto Kaiserslautern’s pitch with giant Bavarian mugs and drenched each other in beer.

“It’s a real relief, a real joy to finally win a title,” said Felix Magath, Bayern’s coach.

“It’s a relief, of course, to win my first title. We were always aware of what was going on at Schalke and it was great to finally find out that they couldn’t catch us.

“This is only the beginning. “I want a lot more titles over the next 10 years.”

Michael Ballack, captaining the side in the absence of injured goalkeeper Oliver Kahn stated that Bayern had deserved their success..

“We’ve played brilliantly all season and proved we’re the best team in the league,” he said.
