Bruce Arena has described his side’s victory over Portugal as the United States’ biggest win in the modern era.

“It has to be right up there if it’s not the biggest,’ said Arena.

“I know we have a big win over England back in 1950 but it is probably the biggest win in the modern era. We have beaten big teams like Argentina and Brazil but this is important because it is in the World Cup.”

“No-one thought we couldwin this game and Portugal were the favourites on paper, but at the World Cup you have to win it on the field,” US coach Bruce Arena said.

“This is a great win for the US and our guys deserved to get the three points, but our World Cup is not over.

“We have a very tough match next against South Korea and we still need more points to get through to the second round.”
