Argentinos Juniors, the club who discovered the teenage Diego Maradona, have named their new stadium after the controversial World Cup-winning captain and inspiration.

The club, propelled from the ranks of Buenos Aires minnows in the late 1970s by Maradona’s emergence, had not had a ground to call their own since the mid-1980s.

Argentinos sold Maradona to Boca Juniors for around £2million in 1980 and spent the cash on players who ultimatey lifted them to victory in the Copa Libertadores.
