West Ham United striker Dean Ashton broke his ankle training with England on and will not now make his international debut in Wednesday’s friendly against Greece.
Ashton was set to start in the match under new coach Steve McClaren, but his place will now go to Jermain Defoe who will play up front alongside Peter Crouch.
Ashton missed out on the World Cup but was included in an England squad for the first time when McClaren called him up for the Greece match.
“We did some work with Dean on Monday and were going to do some more this morning but these things happen in football.
“We are just very sorry to see this happen.”
Ashton now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
