Athletic Bilbao have sacked coach Jose Luis Mendilibar on Monday after just four months in charge.

Mendilibar took over from Ernesto Valverde, who resigned at the end of last season.

“It is a very sad and difficult day for the club because it isn’t a nice decision to take,” said Bilbao president Fernando Lamikiz.

“We are losing a great coach and a great person who we had hoped would be a long-term appointment.”

Bilbao lie bottom of the Primera Liga with just one win in their opening 10 matches.

According to reports in the Spanish, former Spain coach Javier Clemente, who led the club to consecutive league titles in 1983 and 1984, has been linked with the vacancy.
