Wolfsburg coach Klaus Augenthaler has resigned after a disappointing season.

A 2-0 home defeat to Werder Bremen on Saturday left the Wolves just one place above the relegation zone in the final Bundesliga table.

“After analysing the sporting development and in particular the perspective for future development, we have come to the unanimous decision that it is time to look for an alternative as far as the responsibility for the team is concerned,” commented chairman Lothar Sander at a press-conference.

Augenthaler joined Wolfsburg in January 2006 but 18 months on the club are no nearer European competition than when he was first appointed.
