Heracles Almelo coach Gertjan Verbeek has been confirmed as the new manager of AZ Alkmaar from next season.

The 47-year-old will take over from Dick Advocaat, who took on an interim role with the club until the end of the season following the sacking of Ronald Koeman last December.

“AZ have appointed a coach who fits with the club’s football philosophy,” said the club’s director of football, Marcel Brands. “During his spells in charge at both Heerenveen and Heracles Almelo, Verbeek has shown he has the capacity to bring out the very best in young players.

“And he has achieved great results as a manager. We were looking for a Dutch coach who is a strict disciplinarian and has ambitions which match the players from AZ. Gertjan Verbeek meets these two criteria.”

Advocaat is soon expected to be confirmed as the next coach of the Russian national side.

Verbeek, 47, has now signed a three-year contract with AZ.

He has previously coached at Heerenveen and Feyenoord.
