Germany captain Michael Ballack says he is confident of being fit to face Costa Rica in the opening game of the World Cup on Friday.

The 29-year-old midfielder picked up a calf injury during training on Monday, but he is making good progres in his race to be fit.

“I’ve spent the morning in the weights room and will take part in the team training session this afternoon,” Ballack said.

“It’s nagging, but we’ll get it under control. I assume that I’ll be able to play on Friday.”

Germany assistant coach Joachim Low said that everything possible was being done to ensure Ballack’s fitness.

“His injury has dented the atmosphere in the squad,” he admitted.

“A calf injury is always a bit of a risk, but we will do everything possible to get Michael fit for Friday’s game. We hope that he can train with the team again soon.

“We know how important he is for us and we hope he’ll be fit, but we’ve played without him too. Our team is well prepared, we can replace anyone.”
