Michael Ballack is still at least two weeks away from full training with Chelsea, the German national team’s doctor insisted.

Ballack, 31, has been out with an ankle injury since April 22 and national team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt has confirmed that he is still a few weeks away from resuming training.

“He will only be able to resume training with Chelsea in the next few weeks,” Mueller-Wohlfahrt told a press conference.

Pressed for more details, Mueller-Wohlfahrt replied”I am not authorised to talk about it.”

Ballack injured his ankle in April’s Premier League clash with Newcastle and required two operations. The midfielder has missed six German internationals and will sit out Wednesday night’s clash.

“I am quite surprised about Dr Mueller’s statement,” said German team manager Oliver Bierhoff.

“I spoke with Michael two days ago and he sounded very optimistic.”
