Michael Ballack is hoping to overcome his hip injury in time to feature in Chelsea’s opening Premiership match with Manchester City on Sunday.

The German midfielder, who moved from Bayern Munich in the summer, left the field during the first half of Sunday’s Community Shield.

The injury means Ballack will miss Wednesday’s international friendly against Sweden, but he is hopeful of recovering in time for Chelsea’s Premiership opener.

“The injury is a painful bruise and there is some swelling around the hip,” he told the club’s website.

“I have to wait and see what happens in the next few days, but I’m hoping it’ll be okay for the Manchester City game on Sunday.”
