Manchester City will sell Joey Barton for £5.5m, according to the player’s agent Willie McKay.

The 24-year-old midfielder faces possible legal action after being accused of assaulting team-mate Ousmane Dabo during training. He was immediately suspended by City for the remainder of the season.

McKay said: “I have spoken to City’s chief executive, Alistair Mackintosh, and he told me they want the price that is in Joey’s contract.

“If City get the £5.5m they will be happy and Joey will be sold.”

Everton are believed to be keen on signing Barton, with manager David Moyes prepared to match his £5.5m release figure in January until the player underwent a change of heart and opted to stay at Eastlands.
