Stuart Baxter has resigned as coach South Africa after a run of nine matches without a win, the South African Football Association has confirmed.

Baxter’s resignation came just a month after his failure to secure a World Cup place for South Africa and just two months before the start of the African Nations Cup finals in Egypt.

Baxter had recently accused South African officals of undermining his work.

South Africa’s failure to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany was a major embarrassment for the country who will host the 2010 tournament.
