Franz Beckenbauer has criticised England’s style of play at the World Cup, claiming they use “kick and rush” football.

German legend Beckenbauer believes Fabio Capello can’t get his team playing the type of football Germany displayed in their 4-0 win over Australia because not enough Englishmen play in the Premier League.

England laboured to a 1-1 draw the day before Germany’s impressive victory in a performance that left a lot to be desired, although England may have won the match had it not been for goalkeeper Robert Green’s howler.

In a column for South African newspaper the Times, Beckenbauer said: “What I saw of the English against the USA had very little to do with football. It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush.

“I am not sure if the England coach Fabio Capello can still change much there. The English are being punished for the fact that there are very few English players in the Premier League as clubs use better foreign players from all over the world.”
