Craig Bellamy is to be quizzed by police after he allegedly became embroiled in an incident outside a Cardiff nightclub in the early hours of yesterday morning.

South Wales Police have confirmed that they were investigating an incident at a Cardiff nightclub in which Bellamy has been accused of verbal and racist abuse.

The 23-year-old Newcastle player was in Cardiff to join the Welsh team ahead of Saturday’s EURO 2004 qualifier against Azerbaijan.

Wales manager Mark Hughes has spoken about the incident.

“There has been an incident, but he has not been sent home,” said Hughes.

“He didn’t train on Monday, but I hope he will be fit for the weekend,” he added.

Bellamy missed training yesterday morning and was so upset he returned to Newcastle. However, it is alleged that he returned to Wales on the advice of Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson.
