Benfica have appointed Dutchman Ronald Koeman as coach, their president Luis Filipe Vieira has confirmed.

Koeman, the former manager of Ajax, will be presented to the media at Benfica’s Luz stadium on Wednesday.

“Details of the contract will be released later today,” a club spokesman said.

Koeman, 42, replaces Italian Giovanni Trapattoni who stood down last week after guiding the Lisbon club to their first title in 11 years.

Koeman ended his second spell as Ajax manager when he resigned in February after his side were knocked out of the UEFA Cup with a 3-1 loss to Auxerre.

Koeman led Ajax to the league title in 2004.
