Benfica have turned down an offer in excess of €10 million from Liverpool for defender Luisao.

Liverpool are looking to strengthen their defence and have been linked with a number of centre backs including Fernando Meira, Daniel Agger and Abdoulaye Meite.

Rafa Benitez has not divulged the identity of any of his targets but Benfica have now confirmed they rejected a bid for the Brazil international defender.

“It was a good proposal,” Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira told A Bola. “It was over €10 million.

“But Luisao is an asset of Benfica and is going to stay at the club.

“Benfica intends to strengthen not weaken itself.”

Luisao signed a new deal that ties him to Estadio da Luz until 2011 earlier in the summer.
