Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez believes his side are one that most teams would want to avoid in the Champions League, although the Spaniard concedes that success in the competition remains unlikely.

Liverpool reached the quarter-finals of last night with a 6-2 aggregate win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Benitez feels Liverpool’s underdog status can help their cause.

“I am not going to say we can win the Champions League,” declared Benitez.

“We will just wait and see who we get in Friday’s draw.

“But a lot of other teams will have watched our match and think ‘be careful’.”

Liverpool have struggled domestically this season, but Benitez believes rise to the big occasion.

“I can not explain why we play so well in Europe,” confessed Benitez.

“The players focused on this match all week and need no pysching up for a match like this.

“We kept up a great tempo in the first half and scored two great goals.

“We played very well in stages tonight but we can play better.

“If you look at our games against Olympiakos and Monaco I think we were better than tonight.”
