Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has not ruled out making a big-name signing during the January transfer window.

The club has money to spend on signings following Carson Yeung’s takeover, although the need to splash out is not so acute given Birmingham’s impressive form this season.

McLeish is not planning on spending Yeung’s entire transfer kitty in the January window and insists he will not bring players to St Andrews if they will not improve the quality in his existing squad.

“I still don’t think we have to spend £20million, £40million or whatever was quoted at the time,” he told the Birmingham Mail.

“But I have got to bring other players in and I will try and maintain the quality that we have seen since the start of the season.

“I don’t think there’s any point in bringing players who are not as good as what we have, or I think who are not potentially as good as what we have.

“You don’t progress doing that. We will do a lot of continued diligence and try and enhance the character of the dressing room.

“We won’t rule out a marquee signing, if there is someone out there who I think can make a huge difference to this team, I can’t rule it out.

“We would try if we could but, again, there has got to be a cut-off point.”
