Serie A strugglers Cagliari have appointed former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni as their new manager.

The 47-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Sardinian outfit, who fired Pieropaolo Bisoli on Tuesday following a poor start to the season.

“I said immediately yes when offered this chance,” said Donadoni. “I am ready to begin work.”

Bisoli was dismissed after taking just two wins from the opening 12 games of the season, leaving the club 17th in the table.

“I believe Bisoli built something positive,” Donadoni said.

“Now he is going through a bitter time in his career but that does not take away all the good things he has done at the club.

“I will speak to him in the next couple of days.”

Donadoni believes he can turn around the team’s fortunes, saying: “We need to correct the mistakes and work on our quality.

“I am not the healer of all problems and I will ask my players to give their best. As always, I will put my heart and soul into this project. I will put my experience to good use.”

“I prefer to think of the future and not the past,” Donadoni added when discussing his ill-fated spell of the Italian national side.

“You learn from mistakes just as you learn from victories. I was looking forward to return to coaching. I have the right spirit and will to coach Cagliari.”
