Cagliari have sacked Massimiliano Allegri two months after seeing him named coach of the year.
The decision comes after a 1-0 defeat to Juventus over the weekend which saw them drop to 12th in Serie A. Their recent poor run has seen them pick up only two points from their last nine games.
A statement from the club read: “Cagliari announces it has sacked Massimiliano Allegri.
“Youth team coach Giorgio Melis will guide the team. We want to thank Allegri for the work done and wish him the best of luck in his career.”
Allegri joined Cagliari in May 2008 and led the club to a ninth-placed finish last season. He was awarded the Panchina d’Or (coach of the year), a prize awarded in Serie A by his fellow managers and took the award again this year.
