Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has revealed that striker Raul came close to quitting the club after the Spanish Liga loss to Getafe 10 days ago.

Real gave their worst performance under new coach Fabio Capello in the 1-0 defeat by their modest local rivals. Raul and the forwards, who did not manage a shot on target in the entire game, came in for particular criticism.

“After what happened in Getafe Raul told me that he really suffered and that he couldn’t sleep,” Calderon said.

“He said that if things continued in the same vein he would leave and free the club from paying the rest of his contract.”

However Raul returned to form in Madrid’s two subsequent matches, scoring in both the 4-1 victory over Steaua Bucharest and the 2-0 triumph over arch rivals Barcelona. Calderon has led the calls for
Raul to be recalled to the Spain national squad – and even issuing a veiled threat to Spain coach Luis Aragones.

“We are trying to organise it for Spain’s friendly against Denmark on March
24 to be played in the Bernabeu,” Calderon said.

“If Raul isn’t in the squad, though, we won’t let them play there.”
