Valencia’s Santiago Canizares will miss next week’s Champions League trip to Arsenal after injuring his knee during yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Alaves.

The Spanish international collided with Jordi Cruyff just 15 minutes into yesterday’s clash and was forced to leave the pitch. The injury is expected to keep Canizares out of action for between two and four weeks.

“I was very scared at first, but now I am happy that the injury is less serious than it could have been,” said the goalkeeper.

“I’ll be back training as soon as the pain has gone.”

The latest injury follows Canizares’ exclusion from Spain’s World Cup squad when shard of glass from a dropped bottle of aftershave, severed a tendon in his foot on the eve of the tournament.
