Steve McClaren has confirmed that he has failed in his attempt to persuade Jamie Carragher to return to international football.
The 29-year-old Liverpool defender recently announced he no longer wished to be considered for selection, but with injuries decimating England’s defensive options, McClaren attempted to convince Carrgaher to come out of international retirement.
However, the Liverpool stalwart has ignored McClaren’s request to return.
“I met Jamie on Monday and had a very good conversation but unfortunately he’s stayed with the decision to not be involved with us,” said McClaren.
“We respect that, Jamie has been a fantastic servant for England. I won’t close the door, who knows in the future.”
Jonathon Woodgate and Ledley King are almost definitely out of England’s forthcoming matches, though skipper John Terry may be available to partner Rio Ferdinand.
