Celta Vigo midfielder Vagner has been handed a seven-month suspended prison sentence and fined €3,470 for resisting arrest and for an offence against public order.

The 31-year-old Brazilian-born player had been convicted over an incident outside the club’s stadium before a match against Valencia in October 2001.

The player was stopped by two police officers as he drove towards the VIP parking area, because he was talking on his mobile phone. He became involved in a brawl with one of police officers, and the injuries sustained by the officer forced him to miss work for six weeks.
