Jan Ceulemans has resigned as coach of Belgian champions Club Bruges.

“I have resigned my position but do not want to discuss it,” Ceulemans told Reuters.

“I will make a full statement later.”

Ceulemans took over at the beginning of season after the departure of Trond Sollied to Greek club Olympiakos.

Successive defeats, to arch rivals and league leaders Anderlecht a week ago and a 4-1 thrashing at Ghent on Saturday, have seen Bruges’ hopes of retaining the title disappear.

With five games remaining, Bruges are third, eight points behind Anderlecht and seven behind second placed Standard Liege.
