Group F
Lyon 3-0 Real Madrid

Nine times European Champions Real Madrid incurred a humilating 3-0 defeat away to Lyon – their second defeat in four days – to leave them bottom of Group F.

Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was forced to concede that, despite his team’s dominance, they were not as clinical as their opponents.

“Luck had nothing to do with the win”, he said,

“I call that efficiency. They had three real chances, and scored with all of them. You need cool heads to be able to that.”

John Carew scored Lyon’s first , before Brazilian Juninho Perambucano scored Lyon’s hammered home their second with a trademark free kick. Wiltord’s powerful drive made it three just after the half hour mark, and the visitors were lucky not to go in at the interval 4 down, when Juninho saw his 40th minute spot kick saved by keeper Casillas.

A virtuoso second-half performance by goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, who thwarted a series of efforts from, amongst others Roberto Carlos and Julio Baptista, prevented a comeback from the Spaniards, ensuring a memorable win for Gerrard Houllier’s men.
