Former Portugal national coach Humberto Coelho is in discussions to become the new national coach of China.

Coelho was due to meet Chinese soccer officials in Paris on Wednesday to discuss terms for taking the job, Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola reported. Coelho, who was in charge of Portugal at Euro 2000, was set to meet Chinese Football Federation vice-president Shiduo Yan.

“The meeting will be precisely to get to know the conditions they have to propose to me. Obviously you don’t set off on such a big adventure as this just like that,” Coelho said.

“Nonetheless, it’s an extremely attractive work prospect. There’s nothing to stop me going to China now. I am a trainer, I love football and, if everything goes well, I see no reason to pull out of this project.”

Since resigning as Portugal coach after his team’s Euro 2000 semi-final exit on penalties to France, Coelho has coached Morocco and recently turned down an offer to coach Algeria.
