Cologne have sacked their coach Hanspeter Latour and offered the job to former Fenerbahce coach Christoph Daum.
Daum, who was in line to become coach of the German national team until he tested positive for cocaine in 2000, asked for time to think the offer over.
Cologne were relegated to the second division at the end of last season and sold their top player, striker Lukas Podolski, to Bayern Munich in the close season.
“I explained Cologne’s situation to him,” Cologne’s director of football Michael Meier said, referring to a meeting with Daum.
Daum was touted as a possible successor to Rudi Voller after Euro 2004, but he said then that he was not available and intended to remain at Fenerbahce.
