Italian striker Marco Di Vaio has been excluded from Valencia’s first-team squad for indiscipline.

The team’s leading scorer this season was removed “because of the attitude he showed when he was substituted in yesterday’s match”, coach Antonio Lopez told a news conference.

“I don’t like taking decisions like this but they are done for the good of the team. At the moment the decision is indefinite and when he can rejoin the rest of the squad will depend on his future behaviour.”

Di Vaio was substituted early in the second half of his team’s 0-0 draw with Valencia at Son Moix on Sunday, and according to Lopez, the striker abused him when told he would be replaced.

“Marco isn’t a bad sort,” said Lopez, who took charge of the team when Claudio Ranieri was fired in February.

“But there are certain attitudes that are not going to be permitted at this club.”
