France coach Raymond Domenech admits he is bemused by Gonzalo Higuain’s decision to turn down the chance to play for the national team.

Domenech included the 19-year-old in his squad for the friendly against Greece next week, but Higuain, who is also eligible for Argentina, turned down the chance to link up with the France squad.

“Considering his situation, I can understood and respect Gonzalo Higuain’s decision to choose to play for Argentinian team,” Domenech said.

“I admit though that I am surprised by his rejection. He had declared himself as a Frenchman and as any French player he has to reply when he is called to play for the French team, whatever his club and past.

“I wanted to use the friendly against Greece to talk with him about the situation.

“I didn’t ask him to choose, but just to come and talk, to allow both of us to get our opinions across.

“I expect a reply from him and I hope the excuse will be worthwhile.”
