Scotland have been hit by the news that Rangers duo Barry Ferguson and Steven Thompson have withdrawn from the squad for Wednesday’s EURO 2004 qualifier in Lithuania.

Ferguson has struggled with a pelvic problem t this season and was doubtful to play in Saturday’s win over Iceland, while Thompson, who was suspended for Saturday’s match, is carrying a knock.

“Barry was barely able to train last week leading up to the Iceland game. But he made a fantastic effort to play,’ said a spokesman for the Scottish FA.

“However, after assessment by SFA doctors, he will not travel with the squad to Lithuania and has returned to Rangers.

“Steven had been carrying an injury before the game and the knock has not responded in time to be fit to travel and he has also returned to his club.”

Ferguson’s place is expected to go to Celtic’s Jackie McNamara, who appeared as a late substituteduring the victory over Iceland.

Meanwhile, Rangers full back Maurice Ross, who was suspended for the Iceland match, is available for selection.
