Vaclav Drobny has joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan from Racing Strasbourg.

Drobny, a 23-year-old defender, was formerly captain of the Czech Under-21’s and made his senior international debut in April. However, this came too late to secure a squad place for Euro 2004.

The 6’3 defender told the Villa website: “This is the biggest opportunity of my career. It has always been my dream to play in England here in the Premiership.

“I did not go to Portugal but that is over now and if I work very hard, I hope I will play again for the national team. Hopefully to play in England can help me achieve that.”

Drobny becomes Villa’s third summer transfer, following the arrivals of Carlton Cole and Martin Laursen into Villa Park, as the club look to build on last years 6th position.
