In a busy day of transfer activity at Wigan, Sweden international left back Erik Edman has joined the Premier League strugglers from French club Rennes.

The 29-year-old former Tottenham player is manager Steve Bruce’s second deal of the day following the signing of Antonio Valencia who had been on loan at the club.

Today’s moves take the number of Wigan’s January deals to four following the earlier signing of Honduran duo Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figueroa.

“It’s not often such experienced left backs become available and I’m not surprised so many other clubs were interested in him,” Bruce said of Edman, who has won 53 caps for Sweden.
