Vasco da Gama are considering buying back their controversial old favourite, Edmundo.

The Rio de Janeiro, currently competing in the first phase of the Copa do Brasil, need an attacking replacement for Yugoslav veteran Petkovic.

Vasco president Eurico Miranda said: “The fans here have always had a special relationship with Edmundo even though there’s a court dispute between us at the moment. I am sure we can resolve all the problems.”

Edmundo, who has beensent off more than 20 times in a stormy career, is playing in Japan with Urawa Reds.

Sources close to Edmundo pointed out thatthe player’s contract does not expire until the end of the year but he and the club would consider any offers.

But the friend added: “Until the issue of the back page is resolved, nothing can happen.”

Vasco’s current star Marcelinho said: “Edmundo has always been a great friend as well as a great footballer – and I am sure we can always find room for a player of his class.”
