Arsenal’s Brazilian international midfielder Edu has broken his foot.

Edu, who has only just recovered from a injury, suffered the injury in Tuesday’s 3-1 Carling Cup win over Everton at Highbury.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “He has a broken foot. I think it’s the right foot. I don’t know how long he will be out.”

“It’s the bad news of the night.”

The Brazilian, who has been out for several weeks with a calf strain, was the most senior player in an Arsenal team featuring the club’s clutch of promising youngsters.

Edu has refused to sign a new contract at Arsenal and several clubs in Spain, most notably Barcellona and Valencia, have expressed an interest in signing the midfielder. In January, he becomes a free agent and will be permitted to open negotiations with rival clubs.
