Manchester United Alex Ferguson was full of praise for striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy after the Dutchman scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season to beat Deportivo La Coruna.

Ferguson said: ‘He has played fantastic -he was a real threat all night.

‘It was a very good team performance. The attacking play was very good.First half we had to concentrate on the defending part, which we did quite well, and in the second half we improved on that. I think that sealed the victory for us.

‘Obviously Ruud’s second goal made it easier for us, but it was a good performance and I am very pleased.’ United now have maximum points from their last two Champions League matches, putting them top of their group.

‘We deserve the six points,’ Ferguson said. ‘and to win our first two games is brilliant. The players have done really well.

‘It is a hard competition, as we all know, and to get ourselves in number one position in the section is brilliant for us.

‘Now we can put the Champions League behind us and pick up next year when we have two great games against Juventus.’
